Developing Your Career

Three Ways to Showcase Your Career through Visual Content

By Lee Hecht Harrison on February 10, 2015

Social media has embraced visual content and created unique opportunities for individuals to showcase their work and redefine their professional brand. If your LinkedIn profile still looks like a resume and you haven’t yet taken the plunge into multimedia, you could be pushing yourself to the sidelines of the career marketplace.

Here are three ways to let visuals tell your story:

  1. Online portfolio. While portfolios of work samples have long been a part of fields such as graphic design, architecture and advertising, they’ve now become more commonplace within other industries and occupations. An online portfolio can feature video, SlideShare presentations, images and work samples presented through your own branded website, LinkedIn profile or a free cloud storage site that features public links.
  2. Infographics. The goal of an infographic resume is to visually convey that you have the skills and experience for the job. It acts as a supplement to a traditional resume. Though creating an infographic may seem improbable if you have limited design skills, there are plenty of tools and templates available online to help the novice create a professional-looking infographic resume.
  3. Video Resume. A video resume is a short video that describes the individual’s skills and qualifications and enhances the traditional resume. Creating your own video with a smartphone or webcam may be within reach, but take time to create a professional image by paying close attention to the environment, delivery and content of the video. Review plenty of samples online and ask for feedback from family and friends before posting to social media sites.

Once your visuals have been perfected, post them on your social media sites and provide links. Incorporating visuals will take your professional brand to the next level— bringing your career to life while increasing your networking impact.
